Released in July 2013, PARTYNEXTDOOR's self-titled debut EP served as the opening manifesto for OVO Sound's expansion beyond Drake. Recorded largely in isolation by Jahron Brathwaite, the project is credited with codifying the 'Toronto Sound' - a blend of contemporary R&B, trap percussion, and ambient textures. Unlike the more polished R&B of the era, this album embraced a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic characterized by heavy pitch-shifting and 'underwater' mixing techniques. The project was a significant departure from the bright, radio-ready R&B of the early 2010s, opting instead for a somber, insular perspective. Critically, it was recognized as a pivotal moment in the 'alternative R&B' movement, with publications like AllMusic noting its moody, atmospheric production.
