Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?

Released in 1986, Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? is widely considered the definitive Megadeth statement and a cornerstone of the 'Big Four' thrash era. Following the raw debut of Killing Is My Business…, this album saw Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland refine their 'spider chord' guitar technique and complex dual-lead interplay. The addition of jazz-influenced drummer Gar Samuelson and bassist David Ellefson provided a rhythmic foundation far more sophisticated than typical metal of the time. Recorded during a period of personal instability and drug use for the band, the album's tension is palpable. It was originally recorded for Combat Records before Capitol Records bought the rights and had Paul Lani remix it, resulting in a cleaner, more impactful sound that helped it become the band's first gold-certified record. Its title track became an MTV staple, and its mascot, Vic Rattlehead, became a genre icon.
