The Legacy

Released in April 1987, The Legacy stands as one of the most influential debuts in the Bay Area thrash movement. Originally performing under the name Legacy, the band underwent a critical lineup change when vocalist Steve 'Zetro' Souza departed for Exodus, replaced by Chuck Billy. Despite the change, Souza's songwriting fingerprints are all over the record, contributing to the album's tight, hook-heavy structures. Recorded at Pyramid Sound Studios, the album is noted for its high-fidelity approach to a low-budget genre, showcasing Alex Skolnick’s prodigal lead guitar work. Skolnick, a student of Joe Satriani, brought a level of theory and finesse that was largely unprecedented in thrash at the time. Critics, including AllMusic, have consistently cited the album as a cornerstone of the genre, praising its balance of speed and melody. The 2024 remasters further highlight the interplay between Greg Christian’s prominent bass lines and Louie Clemente’s precise drumming, cementing its status as a technical masterpiece.
