Phrenology

Released in 2002, Phrenology represents the most significant sonic departure in The Roots' discography. Following the commercial and critical success of Things Fall Apart, the band spent two years in 'perfectionist tinkering,' resulting in an album that incorporates elements of punk, neo-soul, and avant-garde noise. The record is famous for its centerpiece, 'Water,' a three-part suite dedicated to former member Malik B.'s struggle with drug addiction, which concludes with a lengthy experimental soundscape. The album also features the crossover hit 'The Seed (2.0),' a collaboration with Cody ChesnuTT that redefined the 'indie-soul' aesthetic. Critics noted the album's 'concert punch,' praising Questlove's increasingly aggressive drumming and the band's willingness to abandon the 'safe' jazz-rap label. It remains a landmark of the 'Soulquarians' era while standing as their most abrasive and ambitious studio effort.
