Pre-Millennium Tension

Released in 1996, Pre-Millennium Tension is Tricky's third full-length project and the direct follow-up to his landmark debut Maxinquaye. Recorded partially in Jamaica, the album represents a deliberate pivot away from the 'trip-hop' label that Tricky felt was becoming a commercial cage. Sonically, it is significantly harsher and more experimental than its predecessor, incorporating elements of industrial music and post-punk. The album features his long-time collaborator Martina Topley-Bird, whose ethereal yet detached vocals provide a necessary counterpoint to Tricky's own gravelly, asthmatic delivery. Critics at the time, including those at AllMusic, noted the album's increased paranoia and denser production, often citing it as a more challenging but ultimately rewarding listen.
