Released in October 2020, Remote marks a significant stylistic pivot for Wallows. Following the success of their debut album 'Nothing Happens,' the band was forced into isolation by the COVID-19 pandemic. This EP was created entirely through virtual collaboration, with members Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston exchanging voice memos and FaceTime calls to assemble the tracks. This fragmented recording process is baked into the DNA of the music, resulting in a sound that is more experimental, synth-forward, and rhythmically diverse than their previous work. While the lyrics avoid direct references to the lockdown, the sonic palette - characterized by drum machines, quirky samples, and layered vocal processing - reflects the 'bedroom pop' aesthetic of the time. The EP was preceded by the singles 'Nobody Gets Me (Like You)' and 'Virtual Aerobics,' both of which showcased a more playful, danceable direction for the group. Critically, it was viewed as a creative detour that allowed the band to explore pop sensibilities they would later refine on their second full-length album, 'Tell Me That It's Over.'
