Saxophone Colossus

Recorded on June 22, 1956, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, Saxophone Colossus is the crowning achievement of Sonny Rollins' Prestige era. The quintet features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Max Roach on drums, providing a telepathic rhythmic foundation. The album is historically significant for 'Blue 7,' which became the subject of a famous analysis by critic Gunther Schuller, who praised Rollins' use of 'thematic improvisation' - the practice of developing a solo from the song's actual melody rather than just its chord changes. This intellectual approach, combined with Rollins' massive, 'muscular' tone, redefined the role of the tenor saxophone in jazz. The inclusion of 'St. Thomas' introduced calypso rhythms to the hard bop lexicon, while his rendition of 'Moritat' (Mack the Knife) showcased his ability to find depth in popular standards.
