Released in 1996, Sell, Sell, Sell represents the 'lost' middle period of David Gray's career, predating the global phenomenon of White Ladder. Recorded primarily with Paul Kimble of Grant Lee Buffalo, the album leans heavily into an alternative rock aesthetic that distinguishes it from Gray's more acoustic debut or his later electronic-pop successes. The title track and 'Faster, Sooner, Now' showcase a biting social commentary rarely seen in his later work, while 'Folk Song' pays homage to his traditional roots. Despite critical acclaim for its raw emotional power and Gray's distinctive, gravelly vocal delivery, the album was a commercial disappointment upon release, leading to Gray being dropped by EMI.
