Short Movie

Short Movie is Laura Marling's fifth studio album and represents her most significant sonic evolution. Recorded after a period of living in Los Angeles and taking a hiatus from music, the album is defined by Marling's first extensive use of the electric guitar. This shift brought a jagged, percussive edge to her songwriting, moving away from the intricate fingerpicking of 'Once I Was an Eagle' toward a more muscular, rhythmic folk-rock sound. The record was largely self-produced (alongside Dan Cox and Matt Ingram), resulting in a 'loose' and 'unpolished' aesthetic that critics noted for its immediacy. Lyrically, it explores themes of identity, mysticism (referencing G.I. Gurdjieff), and the disillusionment of the American Dream. It stands as a bridge between her early folk-revivalist roots and the more experimental, art-pop leanings of her later work with LUMP.
