Separate Yourself

Released in 1997, Separate Yourself is the independent debut album from Nonpoint, serving as the foundational blueprint for their 'South Florida Sound.' Unlike their major-label breakthrough Statement (2000), this record is characterized by a lo-fi, DIY production aesthetic that emphasizes the band's hardcore punk and underground metal roots. The album features early versions of tracks that would be refined later, but here they exist in their most abrasive form. The interplay between drummer Robb Rivera and vocalist Elias Soriano is already central, establishing the percussive, syncopated style that would become the band's hallmark. Critically, it is viewed as a rare artifact of the pre-millennium nu-metal explosion, showcasing a band experimenting with rhythmic delivery and groove-heavy riffs without the pressure of radio-ready hooks.
