Released in 2016 as the debut for the Toronto duo dvsn, Sept. 5th arrived as a fully formed aesthetic statement within Drake's OVO Sound imprint. The collaboration between producer Nineteen85 and vocalist Daniel Daley bridged the gap between the 'Toronto Sound' - characterized by filtered drums and moody synths - and traditional, high-level R&B vocalism. While Nineteen85 was already famous for pop-leaning hits, this project allowed him to explore a more experimental, downtempo palette. The album is notable for its long track lengths and suite-like structures, such as the two-part 'Try / Effortless'. Critically, it was lauded for bringing a sense of mystery and vocal prowess back to a genre that was increasingly leaning on trap influences. It remains a high-water mark for the 'Alternative R&B' movement of the mid-2010s, praised for its cohesive atmosphere and Daley's technical ability.
