Seventh Tree

Released in 2008, Seventh Tree represents the most significant stylistic pivot in Goldfrapp's career. After the massive commercial success of their glam-pop and electroclash-influenced albums Black Cherry and Supernature, the duo of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory retreated to the English countryside to record a 'sensual counterpoint' to their previous work. Inspired by an acoustic radio session and a desire for 'warm' sounds, they moved away from the 'glitterball glamour' toward a sound critics dubbed 'electro-hippie-chic.' The album is heavily influenced by 1960s and 70s folk-psychedelia, paganism, and the surrealism of English children's literature. It was a critical triumph, with publications like The Observer and MusicOMH praising its bravery and subtle beauty. Despite a high-profile leak months before release, it debuted at number two on the UK charts, anchored by the hit single 'A&E.' It remains a fan favorite for its unique blend of pastoral acoustic elements and sophisticated electronic textures.
