Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Released in 2002, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is Dream Theater's sixth studio album and their most ambitious structural undertaking. Following the success of their 1999 concept album, this double-disc set expanded their sonic palette in two distinct directions. Disc one features five standalone tracks that lean into experimental territory, including the thrash-metal intensity of 'The Glass Prison' (the start of Mike Portnoy's Twelve-step Suite) and the industrial-tinged 'The Great Debate.' Disc two is entirely comprised of the title track, a 42-minute suite divided into eight movements that explore different mental illnesses and conditions. The album is notable for its use of orchestral synthesis and its willingness to tackle heavy, real-world subject matter. It solidified Dream Theater's position as the leaders of the progressive metal genre, proving they could balance technical wizardry with profound, narrative-driven songwriting.
