Song X

Released in 1986, Song X represents one of the most significant stylistic pivots in Pat Metheny's career. While Metheny was primarily known for his melodic, accessible fusion, this collaboration with free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman saw him dive headfirst into the 'harmolodic' philosophy. Recorded with a powerhouse rhythm section featuring Charlie Haden and two drummers (Jack DeJohnette and Denardo Coleman), the album is characterized by its aggressive use of the Roland G-303 guitar synthesizer and Coleman's signature angular alto sax lines. The sessions were famously intense, resulting in a sound that was far more abrasive than Metheny's previous Geffen releases. Critically, it polarized fans but was hailed by jazz purists as a brave, essential bridge between the avant-garde and the mainstream. It remains a landmark of 1980s jazz for its refusal to adhere to the era's trend toward polished, smooth production.
