Songs From a Ghost Town

Released in 2004, Songs From a Ghost Town is the debut studio album by Duluth, Minnesota-based outfit Trampled by Turtles. While the band would later become synonymous with the 'progressive bluegrass' movement of the 2010s, this record is a much more grounded, raw affair. It establishes their core sonic identity: traditional bluegrass instrumentation (banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bass, guitar) utilized with the structural aggression and emotional directness of indie rock. Unlike the bluegrass traditionalists of the era, Simonett’s songwriting leans into themes of modern malaise, substance use, and rural isolation.
