Sonny Rollins, Volume 1

Recorded in December 1956 and released in 1957, Sonny Rollins, Vol. 1 marks Rollins' debut as a leader for the Blue Note label. This session is historically significant for pairing Rollins with the legendary drummer Max Roach, whose polyrhythmic approach pushed Rollins toward more adventurous phrasing. The quintet is rounded out by a young Donald Byrd on trumpet and the soulful Wynton Kelly on piano. Unlike some of Rollins' later, more experimental 'strolling' trios, this album is a textbook example of the hard bop quintet format. It features a mix of Rollins' originals like 'Sonnysphere' and 'Plain Jane' alongside a surprising interpretation of the show tune 'How Are Things in Glocca Morra?'. Critically, it is viewed as the beginning of Rollins' most fertile period, showcasing the 'thematic improvisation' style that would become his hallmark.
