Souvenirs d’un autre monde

Released in 2007, Souvenirs d’un autre monde is the debut full-length from Alcest and a foundational pillar of the 'blackgaze' movement. While Neige's earlier EP, Le Secret, retained elements of black metal's harshness, this album famously removed all screamed vocals and aggressive dissonance. Recorded almost entirely by Neige himself, the album explores themes of a 'far-off country' he claimed to have seen in visions as a child. Sonically, it draws heavily from the 4AD dream pop catalog and My Bloody Valentine, applying those textures to the structural framework of post-black metal. It was a controversial release in the metal underground at the time for its perceived 'softness,' but it has since been vindicated as a visionary work that expanded the boundaries of heavy music.
