Alcest is the primary vehicle for French musician Neige (Stéphane Paut) and is widely credited as the progenitor of 'blackgaze', a genre fusing the aesthetics of black metal with shoegaze and post-rock. Founded in 2000, the project initially explored raw black metal before pivoting toward a more melodic, atmospheric sound inspired by Neige's childhood visions of a 'fairy land'.
This transition was solidified with the 2005 EP 'Le Secret' and the landmark 2007 debut 'Souvenirs d'un autre monde'. The band's evolution has seen them fluctuate between the heavy, oceanic themes of 'Écailles de lune' and the pure shoegaze of 'Shelter', which featured Neil Halstead of Slowdive. Critically, Alcest is lauded for their emotional sincerity and for breaking the rigid boundaries of the metal scene. Their influence is foundational for the modern post-black metal movement, bridging the gap between underground metal and indie-leaning atmospheric rock.
