Souvlaki

Released in 1993, Souvlaki is the second studio album by Slowdive and stands as a cornerstone of the shoegaze genre. Its creation was fraught with tension; following the lukewarm reception of their debut, the band faced pressure from Creation Records head Alan McGee, who initially rejected their new material. The album was shaped by the personal breakup of vocalists Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell, leading Halstead to retreat to a Welsh cottage to write the album's most skeletal and devastating tracks, such as 'Dagger'. Sonically, the album expanded the band's palette through a collaboration with Brian Eno on 'Sing' and 'Here She Comes', introducing ambient and electronic textures that differentiated it from the 'wall of sound' approach of peers like My Bloody Valentine. Despite being panned by the UK music press upon release during the rise of Britpop, Souvlaki has undergone a massive critical re-evaluation, now cited as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s for its masterful use of space, texture, and emotional depth.
