Straight From the Heart

Released in 1971, Straight From the Heart is the second studio album by Ann Peebles and a cornerstone of the Hi Records catalog. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album features the legendary Hi Rhythm Section (including the Hodges brothers and drummer Howard Grimes) and was produced by Willie Mitchell. This collaboration defined the 'Hi Sound' - a leaner, more atmospheric alternative to the muscular funk of Stax. The album is notable for its minimalist arrangements and Peebles' sharp, soulful delivery, which earned her the nickname 'The Girl with the Big Voice.' While 'I Can't Stand the Rain' would later become her signature, this album established the sonic template of dry percussion and tight horn stabs that would influence decades of R&B and hip-hop production. It remains a high-water mark for Southern Soul, praised for its emotional honesty and technical precision.
