Strong Arm of the Law

Released in October 1980, Strong Arm of the Law arrived a mere six months after the band's seminal Wheels of Steel, marking one of the most productive and creatively fertile periods in heavy metal history. While its predecessor established the band's commercial viability, Strong Arm of the Law refined their sonic identity, leaning harder into the high-speed 'gallop' that would influence the burgeoning thrash metal scene. The album is notable for its lyrical diversity, ranging from the quintessential metal anthem 'Heavy Metal Thunder' to the sophisticated, somber narrative of 'Dallas 1 PM,' which deals with the JFK assassination. This track in particular showcased a progressive side of the band, utilizing atmospheric pacing and sound effects to build tension. Critically, the album is often cited alongside Wheels of Steel and Denim and Leather as part of the 'holy trinity' of Saxon records that defined the NWOBHM movement. It reached #11 on the UK charts, solidifying Saxon as leaders of the genre alongside Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.
