Released in 1978, Sunlight represents a significant turning point in Herbie Hancock's career, marking his most explicit embrace of pop, disco, and R&B to date. Following the experimentalism of the Mwandishi era and the heavy funk of the Head Hunters period, Sunlight saw Hancock stepping up to the microphone - albeit through a Sennheiser VSM-201 vocoder. This choice was revolutionary, predating the widespread use of vocal processing in mainstream pop and influencing generations of electronic and hip-hop producers. The album features an elite lineup of musicians, including bassist Paul Jackson and drummer Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler, ensuring that despite the pop sheen, the musical foundation remains virtuosic.
