Symphony of the Damned

Symphony of the Damned is the 1990 debut from Sweden's Morgana Lefay, originally released independently before the band gained wider recognition. It serves as a foundational document for their unique 'dark power metal' sound, which would later be refined on albums like Knowing Just as Much. Unlike their German or American contemporaries who focused on speed and high-pitched vocals, Morgana Lefay utilized a mid-tempo, thrash-influenced approach characterized by heavy riffing and the distinctive, raspy vocals of Charles Rytkönen. The production is notably raw and analog, providing a murky, atmospheric quality that enhances the album's occult and somber themes. Tracks like the title piece and 'Whore of Babylon' showcase their ability to blend progressive structures with a gritty, street-level intensity. While later re-recorded in part, this original version captures a band at their most uninhibited and atmospheric.
