Synkronized

Synkronized, released in 1999, marks a pivotal and turbulent chapter in Jamiroquai's history. Following the massive global success of Travelling Without Moving, the band faced internal strife when founding bassist Stuart Zender departed during the initial sessions. This necessitated a total re-recording of the album with new bassist Nick Fyffe in a remarkably short six-month window. Sonically, the album represents a shift away from the purely organic acid jazz of their debut toward a more electronic, club-oriented sound. It incorporates elements of house, techno, and even hints of hip-hop scratching, all while maintaining Jay Kay's signature obsession with 1970s funk and disco. It is notable for being the final album to feature Wallis Buchanan's didgeridoo, an instrument that defined their early 'eco-funk' identity. Despite Jay Kay's later personal reservations about the lyrical depth of the project, critics praised its consistency and the seamless integration of new electronic textures with traditional live instrumentation.
