Released in 1983, Continuation marks Philip Bailey's first foray as a solo artist while still a member of Earth, Wind & Fire. Produced by the legendary George Duke, the album represents a strategic shift toward a more contemporary, synth-driven R&B sound. While critics at the time, such as those at Stereo Review, noted a slight dip in the 'musical imagination' compared to the complex arrangements of EWF, they praised Bailey's 'incisive attack' and 'firm professionalism.' The album is historically significant for showcasing Bailey's tenor range, which had often been sidelined in favor of his falsetto in his primary band.
