Testimony of the Ancients

Released in 1991, Testimony of the Ancients represents a massive shift for Pestilence following the departure of Martin van Drunen. With Patrick Mameli taking over vocals and Tony Choy joining on bass, the band moved away from the raw, gore-soaked thrash of Consuming Impulse toward a highly technical, progressive sound. Recorded at Morrisound Studios with Scott Burns, it is a quintessential 'Florida sound' production but with a European intellectual twist. The album is structurally unique, featuring 16 tracks where 8 primary songs are each paired with a short instrumental interlude. These interludes utilize keyboards, acoustic guitars, and samples to create a conceptual flow. Critics often cite this as one of the first successful integrations of jazz fusion elements into death metal, specifically through Mameli's sophisticated soloing and the use of fretless bass. It remains a cornerstone of the early 90s progressive death metal movement alongside works by Death and Cynic.
