The Alchemy Project

Released in 2022 to celebrate Epica's 20th anniversary, The Alchemy Project is a unique collaborative EP where every track features guest writers and performers. Moving away from their traditional solo songwriting process, the band partnered with members of Fleshgod Apocalypse, Kamelot, Myrkur, and Shining (Norway), among others. This resulted in a more diverse sonic palette than their standard studio albums, ranging from the blackened death metal intensity of 'Human Devastation' to the synth-heavy, almost industrial-tinged 'The Final Lullaby'. Despite the variety of guests, the project is anchored by Simone Simons' versatile vocals and Mark Jansen's technical guitar work. Critics noted that while it functions as a celebratory release, it pushes the band into more experimental territory, particularly with the inclusion of non-traditional instruments like saxophone and the use of varied vocal textures. It stands as a testament to the band's influence within the symphonic metal scene, acting as a bridge between various sub-genres of heavy music.
