The Crimson Idol

Released in 1992, The Crimson Idol is widely considered Blackie Lawless's magnum opus. Originally intended as a solo project, it was eventually branded as a W.A.S.P. album despite Lawless performing almost every instrument himself (with help from drummers Frankie Banali and Stet Howland). The record is a concept album detailing the life of Jonathan Steel, a character who seeks fame to fill an emotional void left by his parents, only to find that the 'Arena of Pleasure' is a soul-crushing machine. Sonically, it moved the band away from the Sunset Strip glam-metal scene into the realm of progressive and art-heavy metal. Critics, including those at AllMusic, have praised its ambition and emotional depth, often comparing its narrative scope to Pink Floyd's The Wall or The Who's Tommy. It remains a cult classic, frequently cited as one of the greatest concept albums in metal history.
