The Glorious Burden

Released in 2004, The Glorious Burden marks a significant turning point for Iced Earth, primarily due to the debut of vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens. Originally intended to feature longtime vocalist Matt Barlow, the album was re-recorded after Barlow’s departure following the events of September 11th. The result is a more aggressive, vocally acrobatic record that showcases Owens' incredible range and piercing high notes. Conceptually, the album is a deep dive into military history, ranging from the American Revolution to the Napoleonic Wars. The technical hallmark of the record is Jon Schaffer's rhythm guitar work, which is widely considered some of the most precise in the genre. The album's ambitious scope culminated in the 'Gettysburg (1863)' trilogy, which utilized the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to add a cinematic weight to the retelling of the battle. While it polarized some fans due to its overt patriotism and the change in vocalists, it remains a pillar of 2000s power metal for its production values and thematic depth.
