The Grand Leveller

Released in 1991 on Nuclear Blast, The Grand Leveller is the second studio album by Birmingham's Benediction and marks the debut of vocalist Dave Ingram. While their debut was a more straightforward affair, this record solidified the 'Benediction sound': a mid-tempo, groove-oriented take on death metal that drew heavily from the city's industrial heritage and the members' roots in the hardcore punk scene. Recorded at Silvermere Studios, the production is famously thick and murky, emphasizing the low-end frequencies of the bass and the rhythmic interplay of the guitars. Critically, it is often cited as a cornerstone of the UK death metal scene alongside bands like Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death, though Benediction carved out a unique niche by avoiding the grindcore speed of the latter. The album includes a cover of Celtic Frost's 'Return to the Eve', signaling their debt to the first wave of extreme metal while pushing the genre into heavier, more rhythmic territory.
