The New Order

Released in 1988, The New Order is Testament's sophomore effort and the album that solidified their status as leaders of the Bay Area thrash scene's second wave. Following the raw energy of their debut, this record introduced a higher level of compositional maturity. Notably, the album's structure was influenced by a contractual requirement for a 40-minute runtime, leading the band to include several instrumental tracks and a cover of Aerosmith's 'Nobody's Fault'. Far from being filler, these additions - particularly the instrumentals 'Hypnosis' and 'Musical Death (A Dirge)' - highlighted Alex Skolnick's jazz and classical influences, setting Testament apart from their more primitive peers.
