Released in 2018, The Sacrament of Sin represents a pivotal moment in Powerwolf's discography where the band successfully expanded their 'Heavy Metal Mass' formula without losing their identity. Produced by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, the album introduced several 'firsts' for the group, most notably the inclusion of bagpipes on 'Incense & Iron' and a traditional piano ballad, 'Where the Wild Wolves Have Gone.' These additions were influenced by the band's experience recording covers for their previous bonus disc, Metallum Nostrum, which encouraged them to experiment with broader instrumentation. The album was a commercial and critical triumph, reaching number one on the German charts and winning the Metal Hammer Award for Best Album. It remains a fan favorite for its blend of traditional power metal speed and sophisticated, symphonic arrangements that utilize the pipe organ as a primary melodic driver rather than a background texture.
