The X Factor

Released in 1995, The X Factor represents the most significant turning point in Iron Maiden's history. Following the departure of Bruce Dickinson and the retirement of longtime producer Martin Birch, the band entered a period of profound transition. Steve Harris, grappling with a difficult divorce and the death of his father, steered the songwriting into much darker, more personal territory. The introduction of Blaze Bayley (formerly of Wolfsbane) necessitated a lower vocal register, which fundamentally altered the band's melodic DNA. The album is characterized by its 'epic-slow' structure, with nearly every track featuring a quiet, atmospheric introduction that builds into a mid-tempo crunch. While criticized at the time for its lack of energy and 'lackluster' production, the album has since gained a cult following for its progressive arrangements and its influence on the band's later, longer compositions. It remains the most somber and stylistically isolated entry in their discography.
