Released in 1996, Theli is the definitive turning point for Therion and the wider symphonic metal genre. After four albums of evolving death and progressive metal, Christofer Johnsson fully committed to the integration of classical music, hiring two full choirs (the North German Radio Choir and the Siren Choir) to act as the primary melodic drivers. The album's lyrical focus is heavily rooted in the teachings of the Dragon Rouge, an occult order, with specific emphasis on Egyptian and Enochian mythology. Recorded at Impuls Studios in Germany, the production captures a unique 'transitional' sound where the band's death metal past is still audible in the guitar tone and occasional harsh vocals, yet the structure is purely operatic.
