Verses of Comfort, Assurance & Salvation is the 2005 debut from the Brooklyn-based trio Au Revoir Simone. The album is notable for its unique recording process: the band tracked vocals in their manager's basement shower stall, using quilts to dampen the acoustics. This DIY approach defines the record's sonic character, resulting in a dry, intimate vocal presence that contrasts beautifully with the shimmering, reverb-tinged synth layers. The album established the band's signature instrumentation of all-female vocals, multiple keyboards, and drum machines, eschewing traditional guitars or live drums. Lead single 'Through the Backyards' gained early traction after being featured on David Byrne's internet radio station, helping to launch the band into the indie-pop consciousness. The record's blend of innocence and nocturnal melancholy eventually caught the ear of filmmaker David Lynch, who became a vocal supporter of the group.
