Voodoo People

Released in August 1994 as a lead-up to the landmark 'Music for the Jilted Generation', the Voodoo People EP (and single) represents The Prodigy's transition from rave wunderkinds to global electronic icons. The title track is famous for its creative use of samples, most notably the flute from Johnny Pate's 'Shaft in Africa' and the guitar riff from Nirvana's 'Very Ape'. This cross-genre pollination helped define the 'Big Beat' sound before the term was even popularized. The EP also features 'Goa', a track that leans into the more hypnotic, trance-influenced side of the breakbeat scene, showcasing Liam Howlett's ability to maintain high energy across longer, more atmospheric structures. Critically, the release was seen as a bold statement of intent, moving away from the 'toy-town' techno of their debut toward a more industrial, rock-influenced aesthetic that would eventually culminate in the massive success of 'The Fat of the Land'.
