Way Out West

Recorded in a single marathon session starting at 3 A.M. on March 7, 1957, Way Out West is a landmark in the 'pianoless trio' format. Sonny Rollins, having recently arrived in California, teamed up with West Coast stalwarts Ray Brown (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums) to record an album that would redefine the role of the tenor saxophone. The 'strolling' technique - soloing without chordal accompaniment - became a Rollins hallmark here, forcing the listener to focus on the melodic and rhythmic ingenuity of the horn. The album is famous for its subversion of 'Western' themes, taking songs like 'I'm an Old Cowhand' and 'Wagon Wheels' and treating them with sophisticated hard bop rigor. Produced by Lester Koenig for Contemporary Records, the recording is praised for its high-fidelity, dry intimacy, capturing every click of the saxophone keys and the resonance of the upright bass.
