White Water, White Bloom

Released in 2009, White Water, White Bloom represents a significant expansion of the Sea Wolf sound. Following the success of Leaves in the River, Alex Brown Church moved the recording process to Omaha, Nebraska, working with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk). This collaboration resulted in a more robust, layered production that moved beyond simple indie folk into the realm of chamber pop and orchestral rock. The album is characterized by its heavy use of cello, played by Anni Rossi, which defines the melodic identity of tracks like 'Wicked Blood.' Lyrically, the album is obsessed with the landscape of the American West, specifically the mountains and rivers of California and the Pacific Northwest. It was well-received by critics who praised its sophisticated arrangements and Church's maturing songwriting.
