Whoracle

Released in 1997, Whoracle is the third studio album by In Flames and stands as a definitive document of the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene. Recorded at Studio Fredman with producer Fredrik Nordström, the album features a concept written by vocalist Anders Fridén and translated into English by Dark Tranquillity's Niklas Sundin. The narrative explores the rise and fall of human civilization, culminating in a televised apocalypse. Sonically, it is notable for being the final album featuring the Ljungström/Larsson rhythm section and the last to feature Björn Gelotte on drums before his move to lead guitar. The album's signature sound is defined by the 'Iron Maiden on steroids' guitar harmonies, interspersed with Swedish folk influences and acoustic textures. Its inclusion of a Depeche Mode cover signaled the band's willingness to look outside the metal genre for inspiration, a trait that would define their later career.
