Aggressive Swedish melodic death metal with a cinematic, philosophical edge. Dense guitar harmonies meet a gritty, organic production that feels alive and dangerous.
It's the sound of the Gothenburg pioneers getting darker, grittier, and more philosophical than ever.
A relentless, confrontational energy tempered by a deep, intellectual melancholy.
To Drink From the Night Itself, released in 2018, serves as the sixth studio album by At the Gates and the second since their 2014 reunion. Conceptually inspired by Peter Weiss's novel 'The Aesthetics of Resistance,' the album marks a significant shift toward a more atmospheric and gritty production style compared to its predecessor, 'At War with Reality.' This was the first album to feature guitarist Jonas Stålhammar, following the departure of founding member Anders Björler. Sonically, the record leans into the band's more progressive and dark influences, incorporating orchestral elements and a more organic, less compressed mix handled by Russ Russell. Critical reception was highly positive, with publications like Metal Hammer and Decibel praising the band's ability to evolve while maintaining their signature melodic death metal identity. It stands as a testament to the band's enduring relevance in the genre they helped create.
