Released in June 1992 on the influential R&S Records, the Xylem Tube EP stands as one of Aphex Twin's most aggressive early statements. Coming in the same year as his landmark ambient debut, this EP showcased a vastly different, harder-edged sonic palette. The opening track, 'Polynomial-C', is widely regarded as an early techno masterpiece, blending euphoric, classical-inspired synthesizer arpeggios with a relentless breakbeat. In stark contrast, tracks like 'Tamphex' introduce James's signature dark humor and confrontational sampling techniques, famously looping audio from a Tampax commercial over a punishing, metallic rhythm. 'Phlange Phace' and 'Dodeccaheedron' lean heavily into acid techno and industrial textures, characterized by heavily modulated, flanged synthesizers and distorted percussion. This EP serves as a vital bridge between his early rave-focused output and the complex, experimental electronic structures that would define his later career.
