Young Prayer

Released in 2004, Young Prayer is the second solo album by Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), recorded during and immediately following the illness and death of his father. Breaking sharply from the sample-heavy experimentation of his debut and his work with Animal Collective, this album is a purely acoustic affair. It was recorded by bandmate Deakin in the very room where Lennox's father passed away, lending the recording an almost unbearable sense of place and intimacy. The album consists of nine untitled tracks, intended to be experienced as a singular piece of music. Critics, including Pitchfork, lauded the album for its emotional honesty and stark beauty, marking it as a pivotal moment in the 'freak folk' movement. While Lennox's later work like Person Pitch would define the chillwave era, Young Prayer remains his most human and grounded work, serving as a bridge between his liturgical vocal roots and his avant-garde sensibilities.
