Released in April 2014, Z is the third EP and first commercial release from SZA, marking her official arrival as a key voice in alternative R&B. Recorded primarily at the TDE Red Room in Carson, California, the project showcases SZA's unique fusion of contemporary R&B, indie pop, and downtempo electronic music. The production is a collaborative effort featuring contributions from Mac Miller (under his Larry Fisherman alias), Emile Haynie, Toro y Moi, and XXYYXX, resulting in a rich, textured sonic palette defined by analog warmth, heavy reverb, and hazy synth pads. Lyrically, SZA explores themes of nostalgia, self-doubt, and fractured relationships, delivered through her signature breathy, multi-tracked vocal arrangements. The EP features notable guest appearances from labelmates Kendrick Lamar and Isaiah Rashad, as well as Chance the Rapper, bridging the gap between TDE's hip-hop foundation and SZA's experimental pop-R&B vision.
