Heavy, melodic post-punk with a tribal pulse and industrial grit. Dark, danceable energy for rain-slicked city streets and basement clubs.
Formed in Bradford in 1980, 1919 emerged as a pivotal force in the first wave of British deathrock and gothic rock. Founded by guitarist Mark Tighe and vocalist Ian Tilleard, the band quickly distinguished themselves from the burgeoning 'positive punk' scene with a sound they described as a 'heavy melodic intense dance band.'
Their early career was marked by significant critical interest, including two prestigious John Peel sessions in 1982 and 1983, which cemented their status in the UK underground. Their sonic identity is built on the interplay between tribal, floor-tom heavy drumming and aggressive, flanged basslines, a template that influenced the darker end of the post-punk spectrum. After a long hiatus following their mid-80s dissolution, the band experienced a resurgence in the 2010s, fueled by a new generation of fans discovering their work via streaming. Despite the passing of founding guitarist Mark Tighe in 2017, the band has continued to release high-quality material like 'Futurecide,' maintaining their reputation for uncompromising, politically-charged dark music that bridges the gap between 1982 and the modern day.
