Dense, down-tuned Norwegian metal that bridges the gap between black metal atmosphere and death metal weight. Murky, mid-tempo, and deeply evocative of the north.
Aeternus was formed in Bergen, Norway, in 1993, emerging during the height of the second wave of black metal. However, they quickly distinguished themselves by coining the term 'Dark Metal' to describe their sound.
Led by Ronny 'Ares' Hovland, the band eschewed the 'thin' production of their contemporaries, opting for down-tuned guitars and a heavy emphasis on the low-end. Their early work, particularly the 1997 debut 'Beyond the Wandering Moon', is considered a landmark in blackened death metal, blending the atmospheric gloom of the Norwegian scene with the technicality and weight of death metal. Over their career, the band has shifted between these two poles, with later albums like 'Ascension of Terror' leaning more heavily into a Florida-style death metal influence while maintaining a uniquely Norwegian sense of melody and mythos. Critically, they are respected as a 'musician's band,' known for their consistent quality and refusal to follow trends. They remain a vital link between the atmospheric black metal of the early 90s and the more structured, aggressive death metal that followed.
