Aggressive Norwegian black metal that shifts from atmospheric, synth-touched gloom to savage death metal precision. Intense, cold, and relentlessly heavy.
Formed in Trondheim in 1992, Bloodthorn is a significant but often overlooked entity in the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Their evolution is a microcosm of the genre's development during the late 90s and early 2000s.
Initially associated with the more atmospheric and symphonic side of the scene, their debut 'In the Shadow of Your Black Wings' utilized keyboards and female vocals (by Christine Hjertaas) to create a sound comparable to early Dimmu Borgir or Gehenna. However, the band underwent a radical stylistic shift with 2001's 'Under the Reign of Terror', stripping away the melodic embellishments for a raw, blackened death metal style. This transition was solidified on their final opus, 'Genocide' (2006), which featured a more technical and punishing production style. Despite frequent lineup changes and long hiatuses, Bloodthorn maintained a reputation for uncompromising intensity, bridging the gap between the forest-dwelling mysticism of early black metal and the urban, militaristic aggression of the death metal crossover movement.
