Ajattara

Ajattara is a Finnish dark metal project formed in 1996 by Pasi Koskinen, formerly of Amorphis. The band is characterized by a mid-tempo approach to black metal, heavily influenced by the primitive grooves of Celtic Frost and the atmospheric experimentation of early Samael.

Unlike many of their contemporaries who prioritized speed, Ajattara focused on a 'primordial nightmare' aesthetic, utilizing Finnish lyrics that draw on themes of death, paganism, and the malevolent side of nature. The project's history is marked by a period of activity from 1996 to 2012, followed by a reformation in 2016. Their discography, particularly the early trilogy of 'Itse', 'Kuolema', and 'Tyhjyys', is highly regarded for its consistent atmosphere and unpolished, organic production. Critical consensus often highlights Koskinen's unique vocal style and the band's ability to evoke a specific sense of Finnish forest-dwelling isolation.
