Alec Empire is the primary architect of Digital Hardcore, a genre defined by the cross-pollination of hardcore punk, speed metal, and industrial techno. Emerging from West Berlin's late-80s punk scene and early-90s acid house explosion, Empire rejected the escapism of rave culture in favor of a militant, anti-fascist aesthetic.
As the founder of Digital Hardcore Recordings (DHR) and the frontman of Atari Teenage Riot, he established a sound characterized by overdriven Roland 909 drum machines, high-BPM breakbeats, and politically charged vocal samples.
