Maurizio Dami, performing as Alexander Robotnick, is a pivotal figure in the evolution of European electronic dance music. Emerging from the Florentine 'dance-cabaret' scene with the band Avida, Dami transitioned into the Robotnick persona to release 'Problèmes d'amour' in 1983.
This single became a cornerstone of the Italo-disco movement, though its stripped-back, moody production distinguished it from the more commercial 'spaghetti disco' of the era. His sound is characterized by the use of the TB-303 and TR-808, pre-dating their dominance in Chicago House and Detroit Techno. After a long hiatus focused on world music and film scores, Dami's return to the Robotnick moniker in the early 2000s coincided with the Electroclash explosion, where he was hailed as a primary forefather. His work bridges the gap between the experimental synth-pop of Telex and the driving club energy of modern minimal techno. Critically, he is respected for maintaining an underground sensibility while producing tracks that have remained club staples for over four decades.
