Arkangel

Arkangel is widely considered the most influential heavy metal band in Venezuelan history. Formed in Valencia in 1978 (originally as Power Age), they were instrumental in establishing a national identity for rock music in a region where the genre was often marginalized.

Their sound is deeply rooted in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and hard rock traditions, specifically echoing the melodic aggression of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, yet they distinguished themselves through Spanish-language lyrics focused on social commentary and political repression. The 'classic' era, fronted by Paul Gillman, produced foundational albums like 'Arkangel' (1981) and 'Rock Nacional' (1982), which remain touchstones for Latin American metal. Despite numerous lineup changes and the eventual departure of Gillman for a solo career, the band maintained a legacy of 'Rock Nacional' pride. Critically, they are respected for their technical proficiency and their role as cultural pioneers who paved the way for the entire South American metal scene.
